Supporting the Epilepsy Programme at LHSC

Approximately 1 in every 200 Canadians have Epilepsy. Over 500,000 Ontarians will have had an epileptic seizure at some point in their lives. Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving recurrent seizures. A seizure is a change in sensation, awareness, or behaviour brought about by an electrical disturbance in the brain. Epilepsy can vary dramatically from person to person. In some individuals, seizures can be treated with medications. Uncontrolled seizures can be serious and debilitating, often affecting an individuals quality of life. The Epilepsy Programme at the London Health Sciences Centre features an eight bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. It is one of two of the largest centres in Canada. Here, people can be assessed for their epilepsy and to determine if they are a surgical candidate. We have approximately 300 people admitted to the unit for investigation and about 60 epilepsy surgeries are performed each year. These assessments require extensive monitoring with EEG video telemetry equipment. The proceeds raised from this run will help purchase the much needed equipment to continue this programme.
